Diagnostics

When the results of your pet’s physical exam indicate a problem, or if there’s an illness, injury, or other emergency involved, we rely on our advanced diagnostic services for an internal examination. Northfield Veterinary Hospital offers several diagnostic services in-house, for your convenience, including digital radiography. We also have a diagnostic laboratory for microscopic testing. Because of our in-house capabilities, many test results are available the same day. The sooner we can get results, the sooner a pet can receive treatment and begin recovering.

Pet Digital Radiography (X-rays)

Northfield Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to providing your pet with the high-quality diagnostic care, which is why we have invested in digital radiography. Unlike film radiography, digital radiography images can be produced within seconds—without the use of any harmful chemicals—and displayed on a computer monitor. These images are much clearer than film and can be enhanced and emailed for a second opinion, if necessary.

Our digital X-ray unit is used to safely examine pets’ bones, heart, abdomen, and lungs. We also have a digital dental radiography unit, which is used to view below the gum line during dental cleanings and other dental procedures. With our digital X-ray technology, we can detect and diagnose a number of conditions, including fractures, foreign bodies, heart problems, and gum disease.

Laboratory Testing

Laboratory testing is a critical part of diagnosing an illness and establishing a wellness profile for pets. Our diagnostic laboratory allows us to perform several tests, including blood tests and fecal exams. The results of a blood test can reveal a number of conditions, including:

• Heartworm disease
• Lyme disease
• Diabetes
• Feline leukemia
• Infections
• Changes in liver or kidney function

pet fecal exam can detect the presence of intestinal parasites, such as hookwormsroundworms, and whipworms. For the most accurate results, the fecal sample must be fresh (obtained within a few hours of your visit).
