Learn Who We Are

  • Dr.
    Mareika Ydens
    Veterinarian

Dr. Mareika Ydens was born in Colorado and grew up around New Mexico. She started working as a veterinary assistant at various equine and small animal veterinary clinics in high school, and eventually worked her way up to veterinary technician. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Colorado State University. Prior to attending veterinary school she lived in the US Virgin Islands, working as a Scuba Instructor and veterinary technician at a small animal clinic and the local Humane Society. She returned to Colorado State University for her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Mareika loves working in shelters, spay/neuter clinics, and volunteering for Street Dog Coalition around the Denver metro area. She has a pittie named Bones, and a ball python named Fruit. She loves to travel, scuba dive, hike, thrift, and diy home projects.

  • Holly .
    Technician Manager

Holly has known that she wanted to work with animals since she was a little girl. It goes back to one specific pet her grandma had. She was an older white Boxer named Sarah who had cancer and wasn't able to walk well on her own. At age 7, Holly was helping her to go outside and go potty by trying to lift her hind up with a blanket or towel and assist in walking her. She also loved snow, so Holly would go outside and get bowls full of snow and bring them to her while she lay under a blanket with her and cuddle her. Holly's whole family knew at that point, she was meant to work with animals.

After only days of graduating high school in a small town called Big Piney, Wy, Holly left and moved to the
Denver area to give herself more opportunities for furthering her education in animal science. She was able to begin working in the field as a Veterinary Assistant for Banfield Pet Hospital. She finally found Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology and was able to graduate and become a CVT. Holly has been in this field for 6 years and is still enjoying her journey.

When not at work, Holly spends most of her time with her husband Kyle and their two dogs Chester and Boomer. They enjoy many outdoor activities such
as hiking, camping and fishing. They also enjoy a simple lazy day indoors and watching movies.

  • Aleshia .
    Veterinary Assistant

I am a Colorado native who graduated from CSU Fort Collins with a bachelor of science in Zoology.  I interned at the Denver Zoo for two years while also gaining experience in the animal boarding/daycare field as an animal technician coordinator. I dove head first in the veterinary field as a kennel technician working at a large veterinary clinic in Denver. After a few months, I trained to be a veterinary technician assistant and have been focusing on developing good technical skills every day since. I have been an assistant at Northfield Veterinary Hospital since November 2019. When I’m not working, I try to stay active. If I’m not playing grass, sand or indoor volleyball you can find me hanging out with my family, taking care of my 4 dogs and chicken, or out in the mountains finding the best trails to hike. I also enjoy going out, socializing and building genuine relationships.

  • Dr. Shelly Sandel
    Owner/Veterinarian

Shelly’s journey to becoming a veterinarian was a unique one in that it actually started with political science. After earning her BA in political science from Grinnell College, she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin’s PhD program in Soviet and Eastern European politics. However, with her love and passion for pets, she quickly realized that she needed to shift gears. Shortly thereafter, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin, where she received the Easterday, B.C. award for top veterinary students.

  • "Dr Lai was informative, made the most out of our time, and gave printed information answering my question during my new puppy visit. The print outs allowed me to review again our discussion after I got home. Later when lab work came back positive for giardia, I received quick follow up by phone and meds were made available immediately. I panicked a little and needed follow up advise on the situation and Dr Lai gave calm sound advise by phone. Overall an efficient operation that clearly focuses on the animals health. Very happy I found this office so close to home."
    Ronald C.

They have squeezed us in at the last minute, gone over numbers and alternatives to make sure I'm just just throwing a bunch of unneccessary money at a problem.
